Apply Now for Summer Production Gig ($750 for 2 weeks)

Are you interested in a professional video production gig this summer?  Through Positive Eyes is a project organized by the UCLA Art and Global Health Center that seeks to address key themes of the AIDS epidemic.  This summer ARTLAB+ will be hosting s Through Positive Eyes photography workshop, and the crew needs a couple teens to help document the experience.  

They're looking for 1 teen to serve as production assistant and 1 more to be an assistant/blogger with the documentary team.  The gig runs from the last week of June through about the first week of July, and work will take place at ARTLAB+ and in residences around the city.  Each position will be compensated with $750 for completion of the project, scheduled to last 10-14 days.  Mo Stoebe, the video director, is the primary contact for these positions.  

To apply, create a two-minute self-interview (feel free to get creative), using any kind of video capture device, upload it somewhere public (YouTube, Vimeo, etc.) and send a link to Mo at mo@modefy.com by the end of this week.  It's not a lot of time, so get on it!

Makes Me Wanna Holla (What's Going On... Now)

In 1971, Marvin Gaye captured and commented on the spiritual and cultural chaos of the nation. It's been 40 years. What's changed? What's Going On...Now? Teens from ARTLAB+ and Noise Factory answered that question and confronted social issues in their community in “Makes Me Wanna Holla.” Here’s the visual for this musical piece. Our teens worked on this project for over 4 months and headlined the WGON youth showcase at The Kennedy Center. Enjoy!

RACE: Are We So Different?

 

In conjunction with the RACE exhibition on view at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, a team of ARTLAB+ teens filmed video interviews, asking museum goers about their thoughts on race.

Join the Latest ARTLAB+ Video Production Team (UPDATE)

UPDATE: The deadline for application submission has been pushed back to Thursday September 8.  Get those forms in ASAP!

OPEN CALL FOR TEENS

ARTLAB+ is pleased to invite any and all teens to apply to join the latest video production team, conducting interviews and documenting the Hispanic Heritage Month Family Day Festival in the Smithsonian Haupt Gardens.  The event takes place on Saturday September 17 with a training the evening before.  What we need is a small group of teens who are willing to step up their video production skills by taking on all aspects of the process, including camera, sound, interviewing, documenting, and editing the footage into a final product. Click here to download the application and see the full details.

The deadline for submitting an application is Wednesday September 7 Thursday September 8.  Once all of the applications have been received, a review process will be conducted within ARTLAB+ staff, and individual applicants will be contacted to discuss the opportunity further.  Applications should be emailed to Dan Solberg at solbergd@si.edu.  Please feel free to contact Dan with any questions you may have.

Video Spotlight: Heritage Month Production Teams

ARTLAB+ Production Teams have been covering the various Heritage Month Family Day festivels for the past 4 months, conducting video interviews with fest participants, having them tell personal and cultural stories that relate to a larger theme for each event.  The Pearson Foundation has produced a video that documents what goes on in our Heritage Month production teams and it's available for viewing below.  Check it out!

 

If you're interested in participating in an ARTLAB+ Production Team, conisder joining one of our clubs or signing up for a workshop.  Teens who have taken part in our programs previously get first dibs on production team openings.

Video Interview Team at Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

For the 3rd part of the Smithsonian Heritage Month Family Day event series, 5 teens worked with documentary filmmaker Gabriel Noble to learn how to conduct interviews, set up lighting and mics, and work a high-end video camera. Together the team interviewed over 20 participants, asking them about a story from their kitchen or about a traditional family recipe, and encouraging them to tell their stories.  This footage will be compiled into a polished montage video by an ARTLAB+ teen video editor.
