Fall 2011 and Spring 2012 Workshops

ARTLAB+ workshops give local teens the opportunity to hone their digital skills and become part of a design team. Teen designers learn how to create compelling videos, animations, websites, games, podcasts, and more. They will work with staff and a guest artist/field professional to learn the necessary skills to complete a Hirshhorn-themed project or pursue their own production team. Art Breakers
	Hack, mod, remix appropriate... What does it mean to create something “original?”  In Art Breakers, you can discover how artists broke with the past to build new concepts, then try it for yourself using new digital tools. Starting with art in the Hirshhorn’s collection, you can craft original remixes to exhibit in the museum via QR codes.  You'll use physical art-making materials and a wide variety of editing software to tackle any medium to create original work.
Feb - Status Update: Transform a decades-old artwork into a truly contemporary piece (Tuesdays) Mar - Cover Band: Remake a Hirshhorn artist’s work with your own unique spin (Tuesdays) Apr - On Speaking Terms: Create a piece that continues the discussion an artwork began (Tuesdays) May - Hack 'n Slash: Take a work apart and use some of the pieces to build your own (Tuesdays)

Women Represented
	Emotional. Weak. Superficial. Helpless. Sound familiar? Make you angry? Join Women Represented, talk about stereotypes you see in the media, and make art that shows you're on the right track baby (you were born this way)! Each month we'll focus on one medium, looking at women in photos, videos, animations, or music, and make art in that medium!

Visual Storytelling
	Are you a storyteller? Are you a visual thinker? Tell your own story! Use words and images to bring artworks from the Hirshhorn’s collection to life. Teens will learn how to visually tell a story in these single session workshops on Saturdays, 12-3pm. Each week will have a different theme, and teens will learn new techniques and technologies to create a story based on that theme. Possible outcomes include video, animation, comics, photography, or even podcasts.
12/10 - Handle with Care: Podcast (Saturday) 12/17 - Piecing Art Together: Collage - photography, video or animation (Saturday) Spring themes will be announced shortly!

ARTLAB+radio:Out Loud Workshop Week Two (Aug 1 - 4, 2011)

Day 5,

On Day 5 the teens decided on shows and stories, for the radio station. They also decided on the station name.

Then we took the teens to NPR again, this time the teens were able to watch a live show and go into the studios of NPR.

Day 6 & 7,

On Day 6 & 7, they continued to work on their shows and stories for Thursday (Day 8).

Day 8,

On Day 8 the teens finished their stories and broadcast them live on our station!

ARTLAB+radio:Out Loud Workshop Week One (July 25 - 28 2011)

Day One, July 25, 2011

On Day One, we took the teens to NPR (National Public Radio), to learn the parts of a story and what makes a good broadcast. They also learned how to make a good broadcast.

When we returned to the ArtLab, on this day, the teens then outlined what they believe makes a good story, based on what they learned from Jacki and Chris at NPR.

Day Two, July 26, 2011

On Day Two, the teens began to work on their first broadcast.

Day Three, July 27, 2011

On Day Three, the teens began to make their second broadcasts, this time their broadcasts were about the Hirshhorn art.

-In this picture Astrid, Issy, Cole and Olivia interview a women about what she thinks about Yoko Ono's Wish Tree

 

 

 

-Astrid, Izzy, Cole and Olivia try to interview this guy and then learns that he's french! Then to every ones surprise Izzy starts to speak french back to him. Izzy knows french?!

 

Wow!, Ok now back to work.

Day Four, July 28, 2011

On Day Four the teens work on marking a different version of the broadcast they made on day three. They use the same concept but talk about different ideas, and improve any problems they had with the broadcast they made on day three.

ARTLAB+scvngr: On the Hunt Presentations

ARTLAB+scvngr: On the Hunt Workshop (July 18 - 21, 2011)

This past week ARTLAB+ has been hosting a scavenger workshop from 10a.m-4p.m. Teens ages 13 -19, who registered, came in and found their favorite artworks of the Hirshhorn, and another museum of their choice,  investigated their stories,and then made a scavenger hunt for the world to play on their smart phones.

ARTLAB+video: Abstract City - Final Video

Below is a video by Nnedimma, a teen from the Abstract City video workshop that began in Spring. This video is a mixture of video games and the real life of what people do everyday; that's why it is titled Your Average Day.  Enjoy!

ARTLAB+game design workshop at work (Powered by the Institute of Play) July 11th-14th

This past week ARTLAB+ has been hosting a game design workshop from 10a.m-4p.m. Teens ages 13 -19, who registered, came in and learned the basic principles of game design and hacking! The teens hacked and designed their own games with their friends, and they were able to play them with friends and their parents.

ARTLAB+ Animation June 20-23, 2011

This past week ARTLAB+ has been hosting an animation workshop from 10-4.  The group has been working directly with New York based artist/animator Peter Burr via videos and in-person comminication to explore a variety of animation techniques (stop-motion: pixilation and collage) and ultimately create their own original animations inspired by the Hirshhorn Museum and its collections.  Here is a sample of the final products that are available online on our YouTube account:
